Some Common Spine Problems

The spinal cord in the human body is made up of a column of bones called the vertebrae. The spinal cord is a long and fragile structure which is protected by the vertebrae. Between the vertebrae lie discs called the spinal discs which cushion the spine and act as shock absorbers for the spine. These discs also provide flexibility to the spinal cord. With age, the spinal discs may get damaged and cause several types of back problems.

Some common spine problems that people may suffer from include:
  • Abnormal curvature: The natural curves of the spine enable the human body to stay in shape and balance the body. Sometimes the curves may get pronounced and develop an extra curve. When the spine develops an extra curve, it puts pressure on the discs leading to back pain and other several back problems. Abnormal curvature of the disc can generally be treated by following exercises prescribed by doctors or by using the prescribed medicines and equipment.
  • Bulging disc: Bulging disc is a problem when the outer wall of the spinal discs weakens. When this happens, the discs may push out or bulge towards the nerves causing a lot of pain and irritation in the spine.
  • Herniated disc: Herniated disc is a problem that occurs when the outer wall of the spinal disc ruptures and the soft material inside the disc oozes out to cause irritation, numbness or pain in the spine. This causes the nerves to get damaged thereby causing pain in the back as well as the legs.
  • Fractures: Fractures are in fact very commonly heard of but most of us are not aware of the fact that these can take place in the spinal cord as well. Fractures occur when vertebrae crack or break and cause an injury. Fractures in the spinal cord can occur because of weak bones and problems like osteoporosis.
  • Instability: Instability of the spinal cord takes place when the vertebrae as well the discs slip back and forth or change position permanently. This instability damages the spine, nerves as well as the bones causing several problems in the backbone.
  • Stenosis: Stenosis refers to the narrowing of the spinal cord. When the spinal cord narrows, it causes the nerves to be pressurized thereby causing a lot of pain in the back.
  • Prolapsed disc: Prolapsed disc is also known as slipped disc. A slipped disc causes severe pain in the lower back. In slipped disc, the discs often press on the nerve root which results in severe pain which if not looked into may result in several other problems as well in the legs and the spinal cord.
At Innovative Spine and Wellness, we look into the underlying cause of the spine problems and put in every effort to treat spine problems that people suffer from.
